Photography:
The Basics
By Colin Hartness
Photography comes from the Greek words meaning “light writing” and first became known back in 1839 by Sir John Herschel.

For many years prior to this, people had discovered ways of causing certain chemicals to change color when exposed to light but they did not discover ways of getting the images to remain permanent until later on. Now photography is a big part of our culture, something that everyone recognizes.

Most everyone has family photos lying around their house, many people take these photos on a regular basis, preserving precious memories for years to come. Even if you don’t have your own camera, you have seen photos in magazines, used on billboards and advertisements and more.

What is Photography?

Photography is defined as “The art or process of producing images by the action of light on surfaces sensitized by chemical processes....” (more)

'Twilight' by Queen Victoria
"Twilight" by Queen Victoria
Queen Pictoria's eStation Honors Artists of Old
By April Lankford
Dawning her dark attire, Queen Victoria could personify at times, the era in which she lived. Standing on the edge of what would become the age of invention and discovery in arts, science, and technology, she could not know what an impact she would have on the century after her death in 1901. During her reign of over 50 years, the British created what is considered the most successful empire the world had ever known.

Paintings, photographs, writings and journalism ushered in a new spirit of informality that gave the Royal Family a popularity and familiarity covering a quarter of the earth. She simply would not .... (more)

10 Things You Can
Do to Protect Your Photographs from Infringement

by Carolyn E. Wright, Esq.

While it would be nice to live in a house where you don't have to lock the door, it's not practical these days. Likewise, here are 10 things you can do to help safeguard your images from being stolen.

#1 Use the copyright “notice” –the © with a date and name of the copyright owner whenever you publish your images. It may stop someone from copying an image, either because the person will be reminded that the image belongs to someone or because the notice impairs the image for the person’s use.

#2 Include with your copyright notice the words “All Rights Reserved.” Some additional international protection is added.

#3 Register your copyrights with the U.S. Copyright Office. While you own the copyright to your image when you click the shutter (in most instances), registration itself provides some evidence that the image is yours. Register it even if it’s already published. It’s better late than never. (more)

Is DVD Storage An Attractive Alternative For Your Computer Backup?
By Per Strandberg

If you have a computer for home use or for your business and don't take comprehensive backup for full protection then you are in the danger-zone. Maybe you do not take any backup at all.

You can find in Windows a basic backup utility which are installed during the installation.

I should say for all Windows…,but in fact it is not included during the installation of Windows XP Home Edition.

It is as if Microsoft thinks that data protection is not necessary for home computers and computers used by small businesses.

It is true that hard drives are becoming less prone to hard disk crashes... (more)
